This year there are more student/athletes playing lacrosse at Bishop Kelly than any other sport the school offers. The Boy’s (2002) and Girls (2006) have each won State Championships, and this year’s teams are among the best in Idaho. The Bishop Kelly Alumni Association recognizes and salutes the importance of lacrosse at BK, and this banner is a gift from them — the AlumKnights.

CHAMPS!!  KNIGHTS WIN THE BEETDIGGER CHAMPIONSHIP IN SLC
BK’s girl’s lacrosse team completed a perfect weekend of lacrosse by defeating Jordan High (Utah) in the Championship Game of the 10th Annual Beetdigger Tournament, held in Salt Lake City.  The Knights rallied in the second half to overcome the host Lady Diggers and secure the championship, 10-7. It was the first time in the history of the tournament that a team outside of Utah won the title. “It was a total team effort, everyone did their job and that’s what it took to win it all,” said Head Coach JoJo Brunelle (5th season, 54-13-1).  “We played tough defense around the crease and goal, and offensively there was no single player for opponents to key on because we have so many threats.” The Knights beat Riverton (Utah) in the semi-finals, while Jordan edged Las Vegas-based Bonanza on their side of the bracket. The 16 team tournament included select teams from Idaho, Utah and Nevada.  BK is now 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in TVWLL action. Idaho’s Girls Lacrosse State Tournament is scheduled for May. NOTES:  The largest school a Bishop Kelly athletic team has ever defeated — in the 45 year history of the school — in any sport? Believed to an achievement of the 2009 BK Girls Lacrosse team, which edged Riverton High (Utah) 7-5 in the semi-final of the 10th Annual Beetdigger Tournament in Salt Lake City.  The largest high school in Utah, Riverton is home to a whopping 2,491 students in just grades 10, 11 and 12! The same three grades at BK include approximately 500 students.  Riverton is ranked nationally in the top 700 for school enrollment. They have more than 900 students in one class alone….The Knights run to the Championship included wins over Bingham High (enrollment 2,248 grades 10-12) and Jordan High (enrollment 1,977, grades 10-12)….BK will host Idaho’s state championship finals on Tuesday, May 19.

LACROSSE | 5.16.09

Girls 2009 Lacrosse Tournament

The defending state champion Eagle Mustangs will take on Bishop Kelly in the Idaho Girls Lacrosse 2009 High School State Championships on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Bishop Kelly. The Mustangs won a dramatic semifinal match over Centennial 12-11 to advance to the finals. The Patriots (10-5) face Borah (8-7) in the Third Place game at 5:15 p.m. at BK prior to the finale.

Eagle (13-4) has lost just two times this year in Idaho and is seeking its third consecutive title. BK is 18-0 on the season, including five straight victories in Utah on its way to winning the ‘09 Beetdigger tournament championship in Salt Lake. Eagle and BK have faced one another two times in previous state championship games, with the Knights winning in 2006 and Eagle taking the crown in 2007.

Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to sit on at the game, which is being held on the Lacrosse Field behind the Carley Center at Bishop Kelly. There will be no admission charge, though donations will be accepted. All-Star team selections and U.S. Lacrosse All-American nominees will be announced at halftime of the championship game. The Idaho Lacrosse Association, which serves as the Idaho Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Association, is presenting the tournament along with host school Bishop Kelly.

Maybe the best game ever...

Eagle and BK had a match on Thursday, April 10, at Thunder Stadium at Eagle High. It may have been the finest display of sport-specific skill and overall athleticism (so far) in Idaho’s brief history of girls lacrosse. Eagle, which hasn’t lost to an Idaho team since May of 2006 when BK beat them in the state final, came from behind to win the match 11-10.

Neither team has lost a match to an Idaho team (other than defeating each other or playing to a tie with one another) since 2005.

Both teams have players with significant amounts of experience and ability, particularly Eagle’s senior-laden squad. The coaches are widely considered to be the top two in the state. The officials were in control of the game from start to finish. And the players were focused, highly competitive, and exhibited deftness with the stick and in-game savvy.

And the speed on the field was enough to make any track coach drool. (or maybe that was from all the cheese pizza the track team left on the field earlier)

This was a big night for BK because they proved, to themselves, they could compete with Eagle. It was a big night for Eagle’s team as they again proved that, while being the hunted, they remain a step ahead of their closest pursuer. The fans were boisterous, but not rude, and all in attendance seemed to appreciate bearing witness to what was likely the best played high school girls lacrosse match in the history of the state of Idaho. So far.
