5/19/09 TBA vs. TBA (State Championships at Bishop Kelly)
This year there are more student/athletes playing lacrosse at Bishop Kelly than any other sport the school offers. The Boy’s (2002) and Girls (2006) have each won State Championships, and this year’s teams are among the best in Idaho. The Bishop Kelly Alumni Association recognizes and salutes the importance of lacrosse at BK, and this banner is a gift from them — the AlumKnights.

CHAMPS!! KNIGHTS WIN THE BEETDIGGER CHAMPIONSHIP IN SLC
BK’s girl’s lacrosse team completed a perfect weekend of lacrosse by defeating Jordan High (Utah) in the Championship Game of the 10th Annual Beetdigger Tournament, held in Salt Lake City. The Knights rallied in the second half to overcome the host Lady Diggers and secure the championship, 10-7. It was the first time in the history of the tournament that a team outside of Utah won the title.
“It was a total team effort, everyone did their job and that’s what it took to win it all,” said Head Coach JoJo Brunelle (5th season, 54-13-1). “We played tough defense around the crease and goal, and offensively there was no single player for opponents to key on because we have so many threats.”
The Knights beat Riverton (Utah) in the semi-finals, while Jordan edged Las Vegas-based Bonanza on their side of the bracket. The 16 team tournament included select teams from Idaho, Utah and Nevada. BK is now 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in TVWLL action. Idaho’s Girls Lacrosse State Tournament is scheduled for May.
NOTES: The largest school a Bishop Kelly athletic team has ever defeated — in the 45 year history of the school — in any sport? Believed to an achievement of the 2009 BK Girls Lacrosse team, which edged Riverton High (Utah) 7-5 in the semi-final of the 10th Annual Beetdigger Tournament in Salt Lake City. The largest high school in Utah, Riverton is home to a whopping 2,491 students in just grades 10, 11 and 12! The same three grades at BK include approximately 500 students. Riverton is ranked nationally in the top 700 for school enrollment. They have more than 900 students in one class alone….The Knights run to the Championship included wins over Bingham High (enrollment 2,248 grades 10-12) and Jordan High (enrollment 1,977, grades 10-12)….BK will host Idaho’s state championship finals on Tuesday, May 19.

CASSIE BRUNELLE IS IDAHO’S FIRST D-1 LACROSSE SIGNEE

Bishop Kelly senior Cassie Brunelle signed a National Letter of Intent to attend NCAA D-I St. Mary’s College (Moraga, CA) on a lacrosse scholarship. It is the first time for an Idaho high school athlete to sign a letter of intent to play lacrosse at the NCAA Division I level. Brunelle was joined by family, friends and school officials. BK President (and St. Mary’s alum) Dave Lachiondo and BK Lacrosse Coach JoJo Brunelle were among those speaking at the event.

Eagle and BK have faced one another two times in previous state championship games, with the Knights winning in 2006 and Eagle taking the crown in 2007.
Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to sit on at the game, which is being held on the Lacrosse Field behind the Carley Center at Bishop Kelly. There will be no admission charge, though donations will be accepted. All-Star team selections and U.S. Lacrosse All-American nominees will be announced at halftime of the championship game. FINAL FOUR FACE-OFF FRIDAY IN GIRLS LACROSSE STATE TOURNAMENT

Borah’s upset win over fourth-seed Boise launched the Lions into the semi-finals to highlight Wednesday’s action in the Idaho Girls Lacrosse 2009 High School State Championships. Borah (8-6) edged Boise 13-11 and will face top seeded Bishop Kelly (18-0) on Friday at 5:00 at Cassia Park. The Knights defeated Rocky Mountain 21-5 to advance to the battle with Borah. Eagle (12-4) and Centennial (10-4) each won by large margins, setting up their match at 6:00 p.m. Friday at Eagle High’s Thunder Stadium.
All four teams will be in action on Tuesday night on the lacrosse field at Bishop Kelly, with the losers playing in the third place game at 5:15 p.m. The winners face off at 7:00 p.m. in the State Championship game, which is sanctioned by the Idaho Lacrosse Association, the governing body of the sport of lacrosse throughout the State of Idaho. Idaho Girls Lacrosse State — 3rd Place
After a 12-4 finish in 2007, the BK girl’s lacrosse team followed up going 16-4-0 in 2008. It was the most wins in a single season in the history of lacrosse at Bishop Kelly (boys and girls), but the championship eluded the Knights for the second straight season.
